About

Karen Root is a landscape designer with a particular focus on the plants and ecosystems of the northeast. Drawing on her 25 years of experience as an Emmy nominated and Parent’s Choice Award winning production and set designer, and her lifelong obsession with natural spaces and native gardens, her work is multidisciplinary, immersive, and always fully grounded in the narrative, ecology and history of each individual property.
Her extensive design experience and commitment to both ecologically sound and socially conscious development makes her particularly adept at institutional master planning. In addition, she has a long history in education which particularly informs her work on play based and enriching spaces for all ages.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude with and Honours BA from University of Toronto and has served as Guest Designer and Adjunct Professor at Southern Connecticut State University. She trained at New York Botanical Garden School of Horticulture and Landscape Design.
